marginpar is partially outside page

using \marginpar{} for note on the margin makes them hardly readable as the marpinpar box seems to reach out of the page. Adding BCOR=1cm to the documentclass in onecolumn layout fixes this. Twocolumn seems to be broken completely.

Is the margin-notes package from KOMA Script an option?
